- Every police dept/sheriff/university police must accept firearms for storage under written agreement
- Owners specify storage duration; unclaimed guns become police property
- FFL dealers certified by Illinois State Police can also offer storage programs
- Agencies must notify owners before agreement expires
- Stored guns cannot be used by police without warrant; no liability for damage
Owner Requirements
- Fill out form confirming voluntary storage request
- Guns must have locking mechanism when stored
- Must be listed on public websites (police depts with websites)
Effective January 1, 2027 (1 year after passage). Perfect for situations like travel, domestic issues, or Safe Gun Storage Act compliance when kids visit. Hoffman Estates PD should have program ready by then.
